Troy's Florida Room
Now- I still have much to do but his Orange Tree is on the wall, the oranges are finished, and a nifty sign to go with it. I just have to add the ladder, so he can climb up and pick the felt oranges off of his tree. I may make a trip to Lowes tomorrow, great way to kick off the New Year :)
I painted the tree trunk with "chocolate brown", I sponged the top of the tree with "green green" and "lime green". The oranges are were made with felt and stuffed with batting then attached to the wall with a sticky velcro tab. :)
So far he loves it, but it is kind of high for him so I am going to have to get his ladder done, ASAP.
Here is the orange sign I made to hang on the wall. My dad brought me an old piece of lumbar from the farm and I painted it, perfect for my little guys Florida themed room.
And so far...

Am I the only one NOT offended when people say, "Happy Holidays"?
Happy Holidays.... why is that wrong?
I have seen and heard so many people all in a tizzy this season because someone told them "Happy Holidays". I am not meaning to offend but I say, "Happy Holidays" and not because I am anti-Christ, anti-Christmas, anti-Hanukkah, anti-Kwanzaa or any other celebration... but because to me Happy Holidays just encompasses all of the holidays celebrated from Thanksgiving through New Year. I don't care if you celebrate Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas or any other holiday during these few months... this is a no-judgment zone... I say "Happy Holidays" because that is in fact what I am meaning to say. It is not a dig against Christianity.
I think people are too sensitive. Can't we all just coexist?
So as we are getting ready to celebrate a New Year my wish for us all is that we have peace on Earth and goodwill towards men, whatever holiday you are celebrating. :)

Projects, Projects, and more Projects....
I worked on a multitude of projects this holiday season, some to be given as gifts and others just because the idea popped in my head and they could be completed quickly.
I plan on sharing some of these on my blog in the coming days.
First I'd like to share... the acorn wreath
I don't know what I was thinking but I only took 2 pictures, I made four of them as Christmas gifts.
But here it is.
This one I gave to my neighbors, since the majority of the acorns came from their yard. The blue is a bit lighter than the picture shows. I think it turned out pretty. I made another one the exact same colors for my sister in law's mom (although due to shipping issues- this is going to be her first glimps of her gift! Merry Christmas Grandma Gigi!)
I made a natural colored one for my mom
I tied my mom's wreath with rope and didn't paint it so it would match her rustic decor.
I made another on for my sister in law and I have one more in process for myself :)
These were fun and pretty simple, although VERY time consuming.
The kids and I picked all the acorns from our yard, and the neighbors yard. Then we baked them 375 for 15 minutes to kill any buggies that might be inside... ewww... just don't think about that part. Then I used my hot glue gun to stick each acorn along a straw wreath (which run about $3), then once all the acorns were on, I spray painted the wreath, and tied on the ribbon for hanging.
This is a really budget friendly gift, but VERY time consuming, so if you plan on making these as gifts next year I recommend starting as soon as you see the acorns fall :)
I have read that some people use lima beans instead of acorns but I prefer the acorns and the kids can help collect them, so they feel like they contributed in the process.

Wonderful Christmas Celebrations
We had a wonderful Christmas Holiday...
I start celebrating Christmas the day after Thanksgiving, putting up the tree and the lights. I love this holiday season!
About two weeks ago my grandma had us over to her house to see Santa. Apparently, "GiGi" is tight with the big guy and he comes through her neighborhood and brings toys for all the good girls and boys before things get really busy at the North Pole.
In true Florida fashion, Santa arrived on the back of a pickup truck and brought Sophia a Littlest Pet Shop car and three animals and he gave Troy a Fisher Price truck with a few little worker guys. It was very nice, except for the creepy elf that was following Santa who told me he'd like me to sit on his lap.... ewww!!! MEN!!!
My sister came in town the week before Christmas and she gave Tony and I our gift a few days before the chaos of Christmas began, a much needed date night. She took the kids to see the Yogi Bear in 3D movie while Tony and I went to Angelos (a little Italian restaurant where we had our engagement party, we haven't been there in a very long time, so that was a fun night out). Here's a pic of us on our way to dinner...
Christmas Eve we went to Tony's parents house for dinner and presents. His mom always does a formal and festive Christmas Eve Dinner for everyone. Here are a few pictures from Christmas Eve...
Once we got home Tony and I stayed up until close to 1am, putting together the doll house for Sophia. This doll house is a story all its own and you will be reading about it in the near future... but for now we will just leave it at that... we stayed up till 1am putting together the doll house... but Santa did arrive...
Oh- and the tooth fairy... Sophia lost her 1st tooth on Christmas Eve. She was out shopping with my sister and lost her tooth :) Sweet baby is growing up. The tooth fairy left Sophia a note and a 50 cent piece.
Not much sleep for the parents in the house... Sophia woke up close to 6am. She was so overwhelmed with Santa and the tooth fairy that she started to cry, we handled a small meltdown and then she was off to wake up Troy and open presents. Santa even brought JazzyBell a bone and a new food/water bowl.
Then 9am our family arrived for the 1st annual Christmas Morning Pajama Breakfast (which went so good, I am pretty sure we are going to do it again next year). Here are some pictures of that...
Mimosas anyone?
I love this of my sister, my mom and me (too bad my shirt was all wet from cooking)
Me and my Daddy
This is not even half of the food.. we had Strawberry French Toast Casserole, Peach French Toast Casserole, Sausage and Egg Casserole, Bacon, Cheesy Grits, Orange Christmas Tree Bread, Cookies, Rice Crispy Snowballs, Cinnamon Rolls, and fruit salad... yum...
Then some of us girls took off and hid in Sophia's room to relax.
Left to Right: Troy (not a girl!) Mimi (my mom), Auntie Lana (my sister, Sophia & Great Aunti Jo Jo (my mom's sister).
We spent the rest of the day relaxing, playing with toys, napping, and enjoying being together...
Somewhere in the mix (Christmas Eve night) Troy started running a fever... I was waiting to see what would happen but even tonight he is still running low grade so he will be going to the doctor tomorrow- he doesn't complain of being sick and has no symptoms that I can tell.. so we will see what the doctor has to say tomorrow.
Today was a lazy day.. we stayed indoors, the rainy and cold weather has arrived.. I did lots of crafting and got started on a project in Troy's room- pictures to come.
But as for Christmas- I love this holiday and I'm sad it is over...

Happy Christmas Eve Eve
Christmas Eve is tomorrow!!!
Lots going on in the Martinez House today. The kids and I are heading to the grocery store to pick up the items needed for our Christmas Pajama Breakfast on Christmas morning. We are going to have my parents, Tony's parents, and my grandparents over Christmas morning for breakfast. So we are off to the grocery store to get everything we'll need. Then my sister is going to come watch the kiddos so I can go over to the mall and try and get a deal on Christmas pajamas for me, Tony, and the kids. I don't want to drag them through the mall... and I may try and get an eyebrow wax too, I really don't want to look like a fuzzy caterpillar is crawling across my head in Christmas pictures :)
I need to go to the grocery store and since there was nothing quick for breakfast we made pancakes and bacon... yummy!
Troy was very grumpy this morning, but the pancakes helped.. now he is being sweet as syrup :)
And Sophia has a sweetness about her in the mornings, cuddly and happy, she most always wakes up in a good mood and when I cook something she likes, she is even more joyful!
Oh- and I've been meaning to share a simple Christmas decoration idea and since I was in the kitchen taking pictures I figured I'd snap a shot of it. A simple glass vase and ornaments- I love it and I wrote the names of our family, people and pets, on the bulbs- Tony, Holly, Sophia, Troy, Jazzy-Bell, Aquarius (our fish), and Floatie (our other fish).
I think it turned out cute and thanks to my friend Kati for letting me borrow her vase. Click here to see how Kati used this vase for Easter... I guess I'm going to have to get my own vase for Easter :)
And speaking of Kati... here is the Holiday Twirl Skirt that Kati made for Sophia using one of my old holiday shirts. :) So cute.
Click here to see Kati's etsy shop... we love Kati's creations in our house :) My kids have the football shirts, initial shirts, I've bought bean bags for my nephews for Christmas and Tony has a camo coffee cozy, I love her shop!
Now if I haven't done enough promoting for Kati, I must say even though it is too late for Christmas orders... these are great for birthdays, teacher appreciation, coworkers, whatever... and she is soooo affordable compared to other etsy shop prices. :)
That said, hope everyone has a very very Merry Christmas!!!! Loves! :)

Last Games Tomorrow...
It is the end of the season for baseball and cheerleading.
We are having a big cook out tomorrow after the games. The kids will get their trophies and get to visit with their team.
I signed up to make a sweet for Troy's tball team. I wanted to do baseball cookies, cupcakes, or something... I came up with these...
I searched online and found some cute ideas. I decided cookies would be the quickest and easiest. So I made round sugar cookies and decorated them with white icing. There were many ideas for the red thread online, some people did it by hand with red icing, others used red M&Ms. I went to Target and decided on Twizzlers. Make sure to get the Pull & Peel ones so that you can use the small pieces...

Wild Wild World...
death is such a harsh thing...
to loose someone you love...
a pet, a friend, a sibling, a parent, an aunt, an uncle, a cousin, a child...
death is a harsh reality to life... I find comfort in life after death, but sometimes even knowing that doesn't make living here without them any easier.
During the holidays I often have moments of sadness, these moments get shorter as the years go by... I remember my dad. He passed away when I 17.
I think of him everyday in a fond kind of way... thinking about how much he would have enjoyed seeing Sophia and Troy. I wish I could call him and tell him that Sophia has a loose tooth or I wish he could come watch Troy play t-ball. He would have thought Troy was the coolest little guy and Sophia would have had him wrapped around her finger.
I miss him at the holidays- each year it gets easier but Cat Stevens... he always gets me... I was listening to Cat Stevens and it always makes me think of my dad. He used to sing so loud, play his guitar, and sing... I loved singing with him... good memories are like raindrops from heaven.
I found a website that had a picture of his grave site... at first I didn't know what to think about it, but I like that I got to see it again, I haven't seen this in over 9 years, it looks just as I remember it...

date night...
After church this morning, we hit up Taco Bell for lunch, Taco Bell, is Tony and Troy's favorite. We got home and watched 'Marmaduke' together -which was very cute, the kids loved it! Then we all took a 2 hour nap. My mom came by on her way to the mall and offered to take the kids with her so that Tony and I could go on a date "or whatever"...
Perfect, just enough time for my handsome hubby and I to go on a date...
we actually stayed in ((wink, wink)),
we didn't even leave our room ((wink, wink)),
we stayed busy the whole time ((wink, wink))...
cleaning our room!!!
We had a much needed cleaning date.
Our room was in desperate need of attention!
We have very high ceilings in our bedroom and our fan is far above my head, so our ceiling fan hasn't been dusted in a very very long time.
Our furniture in our room is extremely heavy big bulky wooden furniture... Tony loves it- it's very manly- so it takes a man to move it - so that I can dust behind it... and that is just what we did.
Our room was so dusty, two trash bags and two vacuum filters and we have a clean room.
We even had time to change the air filters before the kids came back home. :)
It was a productive evening- I love that we can enjoy each others company even when we are sneezing in dust, climbing ladders, with vacuums and dust rags... we had a good evening together, it was nice being able to get this much needed work done.
Now to kick off the beginning of a busy busy week.

all I am going to say about this...
I'm writing this to fill in for family and friends who have asked where our white dog is.. and because I'm pretty ticked about the rescue that we have dealt with.. and this is all I am going to say about this.. because I know some people are sick of hearing me talk about it and I'm a bit exhausted of it as well and there is not much else left to do but blog and leave it at that! So here is what happened to Papi and my vent about this rescue (that I will not name)...
We support animal rescues- taking animals from puppy mills and rescue them from poor conditions, neglectful situations, dangerous conditions... In our house we are true animals lovers! We had our dog Tater-Tot from a puppy until she passed away. Growing up we always had animals, I was raised on a farm, and we always had animals... my family jokes that my mom takes better care of her animals and cleans her barn better than her home ;) She would kill me if she knew I said that. The point being we are not ignorant people when it comes to pets and animal care. We adopted Papi, from a local rescue, shortly after Tater-Tot passed away. We gave him a good home and we were under the impression that we were the first to adopt this rambunctious happy puppy who loved children and would thrive in our fast paced lifestyle.
Papi was trouble from the moment we brought him home. We were committed to him though and through his nipping, chewing, peeing puppy phase (did I mention when we got him we were told he was potty trained?), we gave him appropriate veterinary care, like anyone who adopts a pet should be prepared to do. We had him groomed regularly and he was treated with flea, tick, and heart-worm medication monthly. He was given a good life. We went to the dog park at least 3 times a week. He had severe anxiety- which seemed almost funny at times, but in a way it was sad because he really could not function like a normal dog. He scratched his face until he bleed, we took him to numerous vets, and eventually he was diagnosed with "facial puritis" (itching)-Big Surprise! LOL But we treated him with steroids, allergy tablets, antihistamines, anxiety medication, we spent an ungodly amount of money on special foods... for years! We even brought another dog into the home hoping it would help him- that is when we got our poodle rescue, "Jazzy-Bell". Needless to say the trouble with Papi only escalated... He started getting very aggressive, first he bit our wonderful vet, and the vet asked me has he ever bit before- I was shocked and responded with a "no", about three months later he bit me, which happened again three other times and peed on me (yes peed on me) more times than I can count. He peed on Troy, too. He bit Tony once. We could not have him in the house- not being aggressive- but I had NEVER gotten rid of an animal before- every dog I had growing up we kept until the dog was old and gray. My mom still has a 17 year old Labrador mix running around her farm, that I brought home in 5th grade.
Now, think what you will- but I considered asking the vet to put Papi to sleep- he was suffering physically (itching his face until he was bloody and his stress had gotten so bad he was having colitis attacks and bloody stool) and mentally (being a complete nut-case) I thought this was only fair to the dog- rather than have him go back to a rescue where he would be placed from foster family, adopted, and possibly sent back... Tony did not agree though. He wanted to keep Papi and try taking him to work with him... which worked for about a week. He would take Papi to work with him and bring him back in the evenings. I say this worked, but Papi had another colitis attack at was pooping all over Tony's office and causing chaos when he was home. This lasted a week... it was madness! I was cleaning poop out of this dog's nails so that he wouldn't infect his wounds on his head... madness!
We talked about sending him back to the rescue- my fear was that his "issues" would not be taken seriously and that he would be adopted out and then returned or mistreated and possibly abused. He is a difficult animal, with many health conditions, and it was costing us about $160 a month just to keep his medication filled and his food costs. Something had to give... Tony didn't want to have him put to sleep but I was just so unsure if the people at the rescue would represent him correctly and be an advocate for the real issues that the poor pup was facing- either way something was going to give, Papi was getting more and more aggressive- which was NOT going to work in a house with two small children.
About three weeks ago the kids were playing and Tony and I were in our room. Troy ran in and hugged Papi and he made the most horrible growl sound and I saw teeth and Troy's cheek pulling on the side... Papi had bit Troy on the face. Thank God it was NO worse than a small scratch and puncture wound... we easily could have been heading to the emergency room for stitches or it could have been Troy's eye and not his cheek. Papi was immediately put in his crate.
Once we knew Troy was ok, I went outside and called the rescue that he came from. It was 7:45pm on a Sunday night, if Tony and I weren't going to agree as to what to do with the dog fine.. but Papi could NOT stay in our house one more day. I called the rescue and they came and picked him up within an hour. We signed papers, Sophia made him a card... she tried to hug him goodbye but he pinned his ears back and I didn't want her to get that close to him. He jumped right in her car, he was happy to go with them. It was a roller coaster of emotions but I knew that we had done the best thing for our family- a woman at the dog park told me, "our dogs are part of our family but when children are involved a dog is a dog"
I spoke with the woman from the rescue one more time the following day and she told me that he was doing good... having some accidents and his tummy was upset but that he was doing good. (Didn't sound good to me- sounded like a colitis attack coming on- but I'll let her be positive). I was so upset- Tony suggested me not calling anymore... we had surrendered the dog, he was not ours anymore, and the phone calls were more upsetting than anything. I just wanted to know his needs and his issues would be addressed if he was going to be adopted. I even went to our vet and asked them to please note that we surrendered him because of aggression and biting issues. They said his records were already being sent to his new vet...
It was then I realized the papers I was asked to sign the night we surrendered him said that the dog had NOT bitten before... but that's why we were surrendering him? I was so conflicted- apparently when you put a dog for adoption and they have bitten it is harder to get them adopted and it puts a "stigma" on the animal... well, let me tell you that "stigma" is to protect the dog and the people that he will come in contact with.
Papi is not a bad dog, but he needs to be placed with the right family... a quieter environment with adults who have time and knowledge about aggression, I do think there is hope for him. His nervousness should not be confused for energy.. he should NOT be with children and he needs to be with people who are financially secure as his medical expenses fluctuate month to month (one month we spent $160 and the next $500).
Well- I haven't called the rescue for information about him... I did though check their website and apparently Papi has been adopted- they "advertised" him as a two year old (he is 4), who is a lovable dog, who is housebroken (ahh- not so much- especially during a colitis attack), no mention of his medical ailments or his past aggressiveness... nothing about him being placed in a home without children either.
I was sick to see this. I think rescues are capable of doing amazing things for animals who may not otherwise be offered a chance.. but this is exactly what I didn't want to happen. I hope the family who got Papi are everything I would have hoped for him but there is a level of truth that rescues need to uphold themselves too... and by withholding that Papi had bitten four people and that he does not do well with with children is a HUGE issue, not to mention his health expenses...
Needless to say, it has been a long and emotional three weeks- I am glad there is a peace in our home now that Papi is gone and I hope he finds all of the promise in his new home that I hoped for him. As for the rescue that we dealt with- I won't be dealing with them ever again and if someone asks my opinion I will refer them to this very blog.
As for "Jazzy Bell" she was sad for about two days- like the kids- then she fit right into the routine and has LOVED being an only dog. ;) She sleeps in our bed sometimes and rarely is put in her crate. We are really able to enjoy having a dog again and it's not such a stress... the kids can play and we don't worry that she will bite them... she's a good little dog!
I did though check their website and apparently Papi has been adopted- they "advertised" him as a two year old (he is 4), who is a lovable dog, who is housebroken (ahh- not so much- especially during a colitis attack), no mention of his medical ailments or his past aggressiveness... nothing about him being placed in a home without children either.

stop growing!!!
Sophia turned 5 on Sept. 8th....
She has a wiggly tooth! Why can't she stop growing up! I am so proud of the little girl she is now, but I desperately miss that baby who said, "shabby shaa" and asked for her "boogie" (pacifier).
She seems to be caught in the middle... an act I am sure she will juggle for a long time... being little but being big. She says Elmo is babyish, but she still watches intently when it's on. She likes to take care of younger children but still likes me to rock her with her stuffed piggy.
So, a wiggly tooth... I'm sure in a few weeks it will be a blog about a missing tooth and a toothless grin to share- for tonight... my girl with all her baby teeth :)
She just looks too big... that long hair.. so beautiful! My baby girl.

Hair Bow Keeper...
Sophia Ann has wayyyy to many hair bows... probably because I make so many of them for her. :)
She even puts her bows on her puppy dog!
So what to do with all these bows???
Why not a cute braided bow keeper to match her pretty blonde hair.
This was super simple and Sophia had a fun time helping me cut all those pieces of yarn.
We cut, what seemed like a million pieces of yarn, bundled them together. I tied them together at the top, initially I used a rubber band, but when I hot glued the pink ribbon to the top the glue melted the rubber band.. so I recommend just using a plain hair tie. Then I braided the yarn and tied off the bottom. Cut the excess pieces and hot glued ribbons to the top and the bottom. I used to pins to nail it onto the wall and then Sophia clipped all her hair bows to it. :) Easy!!

Too Much Fun...
My kids have too much fun...
Here they are yesterday while we wait in the doctor's office for their check ups.
Sophia was pretending to be the dentist, checking out Troy's chompers.
They can find entertainment anywhere.
So... an update on their appointments-
Good News All Around... I love appointments like these-
Sophia: seizure free, she will stay on her current dose of seizure medications for at least three more months and then we will go for an EEG and go from there. Her liver enzymes have come down, her liver is not enlarged... I'm sure only having to process one anti seizure medication has helped with that. No botox or casts on the little lady's feet either, the doctor suggested physical therapy to assist this tippy toe walker to walk normally. If the physical therapy does not help then we will go back to the orthopedic specialist for casts, but work with the therapist first. She will probably begin that after Christmas. She is tall for her age, I wonder if she will be like me, I was the tallest in my class until 5th grade and then I never grew another inch... standing proud at just under 5'1 :) Oh- she will probably end up having the procedure done on her eye... this is something we have put off, with everything else going on I didn't want to add to our list of doctor appointments in hope her blocked tear duct would clear up, but since she has had this from birth and is going to be 5 and complains about her "gooey eye" we are looking at having the procedure done to 'unblock' it. We will address this more in three months, so probably in March. I like to put things off as long as possible :)
Troy: active, rough, and tumble boy... has a small fracture on his rib. Lovely... he fell a few days ago and had a nasty bruise, xray shows a small fracture. Wild man! Doctor said to continue seeing the pulmonologist at Children's Hospital for breathing issues but otherwise he is a healthy and active boy! The doctor said he was perfect size for his age weighing in at 34.7lbs and I don't know how tall he was.. but they did say he had a big melon head, I think it's just all that hair. :)
Everyone got prescriptions refilled and everyone is doing great!
Sophia goes back in 2 months and Troy goes to the pulmonologist as soon as I make him an appointment, he was due two weeks ago... opps!
